SME CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO BE HIT BY RECESSION - BUT INVESTMENT PLANS REMAIN ON TARGET

Over seven in 10 small firms in the West Midlands say coping with the recession is the single biggest challenge facing their business in 2009, but many still plan to invest during this year, according to a new survey among SMEs.

Research conducted by the e-Innovation Centre (e-IC), which is based at the University of Wolverhampton, revealed that only 12 per cent of businesses said they were ‘more confident' about their outlook compared to six months ago, with 47 per cent saying they were ‘less confident'.

e-Innovation Centre welcomes American ambassadors for the West Midlands

Telford's e-Innovation Centre (e-IC) recently welcomed senior executives from ROI - Research on Investment - a specialist global market research company with corporate headquarters in Montreal, Canada.

ROI has been appointed to represent regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM) in the United States and Canada.  Three ROI senior executives visited the e-IC as part of a tour of the West Midlands, organised by AWM, to highlight the region's diverse and dynamic business base and its success stories.

Legal advice for local businesses

Tenants at the e-Innovation Centre (e-IC) in Telford were once again able to benefit from a free legal clinic held at the Centre recently.

Supervised by Niels McKenzie of McKenzie Law Solicitors, volunteer students Louise Howard and Sheree Harvey from the Legal Practice Course at the University of Wolverhampton offered one hour consultations without charge to help answer a range of business and commercial law queries from tenants.

Caribbean officials see new technologies in action at the e-Innovation Centre

Telford's e-Innovation Centre (e-IC) was delighted to receive a visit from two Government officials from the Centre for Enterprise Development Inc for St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean.

Mrs Simone Murray, manager business development services, and Mrs Claudette Murray, business development officer, visited the e-IC as part of a study tour to find out more about business incubation in the UK.

Organised by UK Business Incubation, their visit to the Midlands took in some of the foremost business incubation environments in the region.

e-Innovation Centre exceeds targets

Optimistic amongst the doom and gloom, Telford's e-Innovation Centre (e-IC) business director Diana Thompson reflects with pride on the positive statistics recorded by her project team over the last two years.

During that time, the e-IC project team assisted well over 200 companies in the West Midlands with IT solutions, creating just under £3m worth of new sales.  The overall target for new business start-up assistance was exceeded by an amazing 92%!   Targets were also exceeded for creating and securing jobs by 12% and 18% respectively.
